It is the hour before going out, or perhaps the hour after coming home. A woman stands before a mirror in a room lit by lamplight, and in that moment she is not one person but several — the self she examines, the self she presents, the self already turning away. Nancy Cicchetti has painted this threshold with extraordinary tenderness and precision, drawing on her lifelong practice of beginning with a photograph and following it somewhere deeper and truer. The mirror does not flatter or distort — it simply holds another version of the same woman, bathed in the cooler green light of a room beyond, while in the foreground she wears red lace and bows her head in a gesture that feels like concentration, or prayer, or simply the quiet weight of being oneself. To the right, a third figure — her back bare, a white shirt slipping from her shoulders — turns away from both the mirror and from us. Three moments, three moods, one continuous interior life. Cicchetti has always believed that a painting is a story she begins and the viewer completes. Here the story is about privacy, about the multiplicity of a woman's self, about the small rituals that no one witnesses and that matter most. The light in this painting — warm gold, electric green, the cool white of that falling shirt — moves the eye the way memory moves through time: not in a straight line, but in loops and returns, always arriving somewhere unexpected.
