She has stopped for a moment, perhaps without quite knowing why. The guitars in the window are calling — dozens of them, golden-bodied and waiting, their shapes reflected in the glass alongside the soft blur of a Paris street. The word EXPERIENCE glows above her in bold letters, half-ironic, half-invitation. She looks outward, away from all that music, as if weighing something private against the noise of the world behind the glass. Nancy Cicchetti began this painting, as she begins all of her work, with a photograph taken on her own travels — a moment caught, then transformed. The dimensions shifted, the reds deepened to a near-arterial intensity, the woman's jacket cooled to the grey of winter city light. What emerged is not documentation but feeling: the particular aloneness of standing in a busy street, surrounded by beauty you are not yet sure belongs to you. The viewer's eye moves exactly as Cicchetti intends — across the warm chaos of the shop window, back to the stillness of the face, down the clean line of the jacket, and out again to the open pavement. It is a painting about thresholds: between noise and quiet, between experience and longing, between the street and whatever comes next. She leaves the story open, as she always does, for us to finish.
